Shropshire facts
The county of Shropshire has been called “the quietest place under the sun”. It is a place people have been visiting for centuries, even before the monks discovered it in medieval times
In more recent years, Abraham Darby began the Industrial Revolution by the River Severn, then later his grandson built the world's first iron bridge across it.
The Telford region houses some of the world’s finest collections of transport.
Despite its dramatic history, Shropshire remains one of only three remaining rural idylls. Along its border with Wales, it is possible to explore ancient earthworks such as Offa’s Dyke, and the Iron Age Hill Fort at Old Oswestry which is chronicled in the folklore of King Arthur. The town of Oswestry has a thriving market which dates back to 1190.
